SNU-MSE, Enabler of Economic Growth of South Korea.
South Korea achieved great economic success in many aspects. It is the only country in the world who became a creditor country from emerging economy. SNU-MSE has been carries out a pivotal role in such change by providing talented manpower and research results. Originally combination of 3 departments, metallurgy, textile and polymer, and ceramics, SNU-MSE covers most of areas in materials researches. We have been leading and supporting the industries in Korea, such as POSCO, Samsun, LG, and Hyundai. At the same time, we are contributing the welfare of the next generation of society by resolving global issues through innovation in materials. Artificial-intelligence-driven materials discovery and characterization, sustainable energy materials, biocompatible electronic materials, and future semiconductors are some examples of intensively discussed issues. In this respect, our key strategy of materials science research is the “Balance”. Materials science research aims toward balance in topics and helps to balance many issues. In detail, the balance between: 1) domestic and global issues, 2) academics and industrial topics, 3) emergent and classic materials, 4) metals, ceramics, and polymers, 5) basic science and engineering, 6) structural, electronic, bio, and energy materials, and even 7) funding the source of industry and government is always emphasized.
